Anthrax Outbreak Confirmed in Kanungu District, Quarantine Imposed

On September 17, 2024, Ambrose Mwesigye, the Kanungu District Resident District Commissioner, announced a quarantine on all animals following a confirmed anthrax outbreak affecting local cattle. The quarantine includes cows, goats, sheep, pigs, and their products, effective until further notice.

As of the announcement, 63 cattle have died, and 28 are currently ill. Tragically, the outbreak has resulted in one confirmed human death, with another person receiving treatment for related symptoms. Mwesigye reported that security forces are on high alert, and all butchers and animal markets have been closed to prevent further transmission.

Dr. Mutahunga Birungi, the District Health Officer, detailed earlier concerns raised by District Veterinary Officer Dr. Tumwesigye Aloysius regarding cattle deaths in Kambuga Sub-County. Testing by the National Animal Diseases Diagnostics and Epidemiological Centre confirmed a clostridial infection, prompting immediate vaccination measures and public advisories to avoid consuming or slaughtering infected animals.

The outbreak first came to light when Mburameizi Barracks HCIII reported unusual illnesses among herdsmen and butchers. Two men exhibiting anthrax-like symptoms had slaughtered a dead cow, leading health officials to treat similar cases as potential anthrax infections until proven otherwise.

Anthrax, caused by the Bacillus anthracis bacteria, poses a risk of transmission between animals and humans. Symptoms can vary based on the type of infection, including skin lesions, swelling, and severe respiratory issues.

As of the latest reports, 28 cases have been documented across various sub-counties, with a current case fatality rate of 7%. The health department is emphasizing strict compliance with the quarantine to contain the outbreak and prevent further fatalities.
